About Sotol

SOTOL IS MORE THAN JUST A SPIRIT – IT’S A CONNECTION TO THE LAND, THE PEOPLE, AND THE TRADITIONS THAT CAME BEFORE US.

WHAT IS SOTOL?

Sotol is a distilled spirit made from the wild Dasylirion plant, native to the Chihuahuan Desert in northern Mexico. Unlike tequila and mezcal, which are produced from the agave plant, sotol comes from a different species altogether, giving it a unique identity and sought after flavor profile among Mexican spirits.

ORIGINS

The origin of sotol dates back over 800 years, when the indigenous Tarahumara people used the Dasylirion plant for food and practical purposes. It was not until the 16th century that Spanish colonizers introduced modern distillation techniques that ultimately gave birth to the spirit we know and love today.

OUR COMMITMENT TO
SUSTAINABLE SPIRIT

HARVEST

Hand-selected and wild-harvested in the Chihuahuan Desert’s rugged terrain –where no plantations disturb its natural growth– the Dasylirion plant, affectionately known as the “desert spoon” reflects the raw beauty of this special environment, delivering flavors that are crafted by nature.

DENOMINATION OF ORIGIN

Sotol Hacienda is proud to have played a key role in securing sotol’s Denomination of Origin status, which establishes rigorous quality standards and protection. Today, authentic sotol can only be produced in the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Durango. This region’s arid climate and harsh terrain provide the ideal conditions for the wild Dasylirion plant to thrive.
